Home Birth Aotearoa Photography Competition Division Winner | Claire Humphries - Auckland Family Photographer
Recently Home Birth Aotearoa held a very special photography competition. Entrants were invited to reframe how birth is represented in Aotearoa. To contribute images of strength, of diversity, of originality and of birth in the home space.
As an organisation committed to the positive promotion of home birth as an option they found that again and again imagery available for them to use "reduce women in pregnancy to headless torsos dressed in clinical white, with birth being avoided altogether or portrayed in a medical context only. The pregnant woman is portrayed as object rather than subject. More concerning the majority of images lack any kind of diversity. Ultimately, [...] there is a challenge to ensuring our images are true to the kaupapa of Home Birth Aotearoa"
The photography entered throughout the competition was beautiful. Some of it intense and some funny. You can see all the winners of the categories here - including the picture which won People's Choice, the photographer was two years old!!!
The photographs I submitted hopefully add to the diversity and honesty of imagery Home Birth Aotearoa can use in their promotion and education. The first picture was selected as winner in the Professional Division, I am very thankful for the gift of being present at this birth and am so grateful that this moment can be shared in a positive way.
